Read your Bible!
Some months ago, I published a book, and I was over the moon about it. The thought of others reading my work filled me with excitement. I spent some time deciding on the right price, believing I had struck the perfect balance. Then the hard part came: getting people to buy the book. It wasn’t easy. Thankfully, some people did buy it, but here’s the kicker: some of them never even read it. Ouch. That stung. Why would someone spend their money on something and never open it? Maybe they bought it out of love or kindness, wanting to support me. Maybe they didn’t want to hurt my feelings by saying no. Maybe reading just isn’t their thing. But if the book sits unopened, unread—what was the point?
Now, let me make this clear: this isn’t about pointing fingers at anyone who bought my book but hasn’t read it. In fact, I somehow get it. My shelves have books I’ve never opened, despite my best intentions. Life gets busy, priorities shift, and sometimes things just don’t happen as we planned.
This made me reflect on something deeper. It hit me: Isn’t this exactly what we often do with the Bible?
Many of us get a Bible because we love God or want to feel closer to Him. We know His Word is powerful and holds the key to knowing Him better. But how often do we leave it closed and collecting dust?
My book can never be compared to the Bible but this parallel humbled me. How must God feel when we, His children, neglect the incredible gift He’s given us? Why do we leave the Bible unread?
Here are a few reasons that came to mind:
- Lack of genuine motive: How much of Jesus do we want to know? Did we buy that Bible because we were hungry to understand Him and get close to him or because it felt like the “Christian thing” to do? Isn’t it sometimes just part of checking the box?
- Laziness: Let’s be real—reading can take effort. Some days, it’s easier to scroll through our phones or binge-watch TV than to sit down and study scripture.
- We don’t realize the worth of what we have: If we truly grasped the treasure sitting on our bookshelf, we wouldn’t ignore it. God’s Word is living, powerful, and life-changing. But sometimes, we forget that or fail to see its value.
- We just want Him off our backs: This one’s tough. But sometimes, we engage with God out of obligation, not desire. We don’t want to feel guilty, so we do the bare minimum.
The more I thought about this, the more convicted I felt. How often do I treat the Bible—the very Word of God—like a book I bought but never got around to reading? God gave us His heart, His wisdom, and His promises in that book. Imagine how it must feel to see it unopened, day after day.
Writing this is a reminder to myself as much as to anyone else. God gave us His Word not as a burden but as a gift—a living, breathing source of truth, hope, and life. When we open it, we’re opening the door to an encounter with Him.
So, let’s not let the Bible sit unopened like an unread book on a shelf. Let’s dive in, savour it, and let it transform us. After all, God didn’t just give us a book—He gave us a love letter straight from His heart.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

This is so succinctly said, and I hope many people get to read this article. 💡📌
How does one put in so much effort to make something for a dear one, and find it lying carelessly somewhere, discarded…
Reading the Bible isn’t a natural thing that we come to this world endowed with.
We must stay disciplined and deliberate about it. Asking the Author and owner to help us with both reading and understanding His book is also a great idea.
Good read! God bless you 💜
